In 2018 Slovenian Post started remodelling their non-core business model regarding products at POS.
It’s a long-standing practice for the Post to be selling consumer goods at the same time as their customers are conducting post related business. But once they started doing small retail on a higher level, its challenges became more obvious.
It became clear that doing retail and post related transactions at the same time is very time consuming. Not only that the employees needed to do core business work, now they had to run a retail store as well, meaning taking care of prices, stock on shelves, sorting the goods etc. For them, the most obvious and most time consuming was having accurate prices on the shelves. One must know, that this kind of small retail is dependent on frequent price corrections. The amount of work hours for that segment was just too high.
Slovenian Post started to cooperate with LEOSS, Pricer’s leading partner for this region on the segment of electronic shelf labelling (ESL). Government operated organizations are obligated to act responsibly, meaning different ESL’s providers, companies and technologies were tested within a pilot project. LEOSS’s main competitor was SES-Imagotag. Each of us equipped one Postal office for a period of 2 months. Many different parameters were tested – speed of displayed data refreshment, battery life, latency, ease of use as well as ease of cooperation with the company that installs and manages ESLs, their response time, willingness to overcome specific obstacles etc.
Slovenian Post had several specific demands. Let us describe two of them.
The first was no Wi-Fi coverage within the store. As they decided to go ahead with SmartTag HD ESL, we had two options of pairing ESL with the product (we wanted pairing to be done on the shelf). The first one was using a Bluetooth scanner, which means it must be done by two people. One is scanning, the other is checking the correctness on screen, where pairing is done. It’s not quite an advance way to do it, but it can be done. The other factor is time – two people doing one pairing. The second, smarter way of doing it, was by our own software that runs on an Android handheld terminal and it’s sole purpose is making a database of paired items (ESL-product). After scanning was done, we just placed the terminal to the cradle and deployed the recently made database to the Pricer software. Pricer than transmitted the data to ESLs in the store (picture 1).

The second demand was a split screen for two different items on she same peg hook. As they went with the smallest version of SmartTag HD, the vertical split was out of the question. So we made horizontal split on the screen that goes great with peg hooks, because items are on the same level, not left and right like on the shelf (picture 2).

Prices in Slovenian Post are now up to date and always the same as in the ERP. Complaints regarding pricing has dropped. Employees are more relaxed and have more time to deal with the customers. And there is an ecological view as well. These electronic shelf labels have 5 – 7 years of battery life span, meaning no printing, no paper for that period of time.
The store is more enjoyable to look at and the feel is cleaner (as you can see in pictures below). And the best part is that employees in charge or people in HQ can manage the system with a few simple mouse clicks.
"We started our cooperation with LEOSS at the end of 2017, when we were searching for solutions regarding price management. As it turned out, digital pricing was the way to go. At first we tested the Pricer system at one of our post office as a pilot project to see, how it performs and how our employees manage it all. We quickly found out, that managing the system is a breeze and our employees were able to concentrate on customers full time. Before the implementation, we lost a lot of valuable time printing and changing the prices, now, the process is fast and easy with lots of automation.
Because of great results, fantastic cooperation and agility from LEOSS, we decided to expand the system to other post offices as well - 8 in 2018 and more this year."
